Joint using TEC and IRI for studing ionospheric responses on geomagnetic disturbances

Ionospheric responses on Space Weather disturbances are investigated by many methods. Most of them require huge global experimental and modeling resources. In this paper a possibility of studing SW-responses is investigated by more simple method which is important with an applied point of view (in regional or local sense). It is joint using TEC data and the IRI model. Because the IRI model is a median one it must be corrected by near real-time TEC data. The review and analysis of existing IRI-correction methods are given. The new method is proposed which is based on the factor connecting observational tau(obs) with tau(IRI) where tau=TEC/NmF2 is an ionospheric equivalent slab thickness. Examples of comparisons of real and corrected foF2 values on some stations during storms show that during isolated events most of methods allow to reconstruct a picture of the ionospheric behaviour by a sufficient accuracy. For long moderate disturbed conditions typical for period October-November2003 it is difficult sometimes to get a sufficient correspondence.
