Observations and Forecasts of Extreme Solar Activity
Lawrence G.,

October-November 2003 witnessed some of the most extreme and dramatic solar events and terrestrial responses to be observed during the space age. The ESA/NASA joint project SOHO satellite was one of the prime observers during this period. Its data were essential for real-time monitoring of these highly significant events, but also permitted forecasting of both the potential geomagnetic response, and imminent/future solar activity. The SOHO observations are reviewed, along with supporting data from other space- and ground-based sources, and forecasts of terrestrial responses and further solar events are discussed in the context of what was subsequently seen to occur.
